Opendesk is a global platform for local making. It gathers a global network of makers and a collection of furniture by a range of international designers. Because that furniture is designed for digital fabrication, it can be downloaded as a digital file and made locally—on demand, anywhere in the world. The “Edie” stools used in this exhibition were designed by David and Joni Steiner and fabricated using this “open-making” process. If Enzo Mari were a hacker, he would also design furniture as software.

This documentary shows a common week of the tireless activities driven by Barcelona‘s Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH). The PAH is the organisation behind Spain’s anti-eviction movement, and has successfully resisted over 1000 evictions since it was founded in 2009. The cameras placed at the heart of the organization depict not only the post-housing bubble drama but most importantly the huge invisible work behind the PAH and the deep process of transformation and empowerment of those who participate in it. Because, those who care of people are taking care of the commons.

Envisioned as “brick that holds beer” this iconic re-usable bottle, designed by John Habraken in 1963, was intended to serve as a building block after use. Its design, with flat sides and provided with relief and a concave bottom allowed horizontal stacking as masonry walls. Posed as a response to the increase amount of glass waste of beer industry; it didn’t make its way to a commercial production but it remains as “the first industrial initiative to develop recyclable packaging” before the emergence of eco-conscious consumer designs.

Defense Distributed is an online, open-source organization that collaboratively produce, publish, and distribute to the public, without charge, information and knowledge related to the digital manufacture of arms. On May 5, 2013, DD released the files for The Liberator pistol as result of the Wiki Weapon Project. This release was met by a flurry of US governmental censures and investigations. Its 21st century, and in some countries you have the right to buy a gun, but you’re not free to make it by yourself. Is it ethics, security or pure economics?

Crafting Neightbourhoods

Şişhane district is a 100 years old craft neighbourhood in İstanbul. Since 2006, Made in Şişhane looks at the unmediated design practices and crafts knowledge in the neighbourhood which is threatened by gentrification and state led policies to remove small scale production from the city center to periphery. How does the production process is integrated to the space, and the neighbourhood become a collaborative network? Meet Artin Aharon, one of the local masters, showing us how to take care of the commons with his own hands and experiences.

OpenStructures

The OS (OpenStructures) project explores the possibility of a modular construction model where everyone designs for everyone on the basis of one shared geometrical grid. It initiates a kind of collaborative Meccano to which everybody can contribute parts, components and structures. It is an ongoing experiment that wants to find out what happens if people design objects according to a shared modular grid, a common open standard that stimulates the exchange of parts, components, experiences and ideas and aspires to build things together.

This toy is the result of mixing young and unemployed talent, digital fabrication and the energy of neighbourhood networks. The main objective of these groups is to support people whose financial situation makes it hard for them to meet their basic food and housing needs. But their initiatives go beyond simply providing assistance. With the support of local small businesses, they have come up with ideas and projects that boost the autonomy of local residents, and even create new types of jobs.

In 1974 the artist and designer Enzo Mari, presented this project as an open manual with nineteen designs using rough boards, to self-made basic furniture: from tables and chairs, to wardrobe and beds. The simple design of these easy-to-assemble furniture usually required nothing more than a hammer and nails. With Autoprogettazione, Enzo Mari open-sourced the furnishing industry with a critical eye. For you to use in this exhibition, we built some units of the 1123 xP chair.

Tele Coffee Grinder

The Tele Coffee Grinder presents the logic of conjunction of whole natural objects. Together with their autonomous functions, they also participate in a parallel secondary production process, seemingly different from their original use (via Arduino software, a handset activates an objects circuit, which ends up grinding coffee). This logic alludes the way social and production procedures operate, where subjects, products and services participate without their ‘awareness’ or supervision in an infinite number of socioeconomic ‘circuits’, open to continuous enrichment and adaptation. The objects that the tele coffee grinder consists of have an ironic reference to human freedoms of movement, communication and production.

In the contemporary field of inexhaustible ‘generations’ of products, the concept of encyclopedia—as an objects catalogue—could now be substituted by an encyclopedia of ‘attributes’, which could define the potential ‘integrations-uses of objects within different contexts. These properties would refer to concepts such as ‘motor’, ‘coil’, ‘capacitor’ or ‘resistance’ and can serve as potential waiting interconnections. It is the overall amount of its potential accessions that now defines an object. The small structure is part of a theoretical ongoing research on tinkering and ad hoc translations of architectural exemplars.

Fabricating the City through an AdHoc Platform

FabAthens is a platform for developing ad hoc city interventions in a continuous urban transformation. FabAthens is a productive and shareable by the citizens’ platform. It uses Urban Innovation Ecosystems as a tool and refers to Adhoc Tinguely’s NTUA workshops / courses for a modelization of its “from meta-mechanics to post-digital” dimension (https://metamechpostdigital.wordpress.com). It relates to the ad hoc conceived courses, as being the modelization of its “post-digital” dimension.

Urban Innovation Ecosystmems comprise localized small-scale innovations distributed in the urban field, which through their interconnection, accelerate strategies related to a Senseable, Creative, Productive contemporary city. The aspect of urban production is central in the research roadmap, rendering the transformation of Athens into a FAB CITY as an ultimate goal. Senseable City is equipped with intelligent systems, in order to collect urban data in real time, allowing open access for all users. Large sensor networks provide critical information about natural and built environment. Creative City promotes new types of synergies among users, local institutions, academia and businesses (4P: public-private-people partnership), aiming at innovation and knowledge creation. Productive City is a network of interconnected small-scale producers, applying open fabrication with the contribution of FabLab Athens (Cf HUM(erus), humerusrobot.wordpress.com).

The works we presented from Tinguely v.1 course of the School of Architecture NTUA dated from 2014. P. Vasilatos, A. Stavridou, and M. Papavasileiou participate also in the 2015 course.
