Always implicitly present in any public space, law tends to be algorithmic, quantitative and invisible. Local and national regulations discretise human behaviour; sometimes they are rigorous and mathematical, other times loose and under-defined. Here, they lend themselves to be represented visually, and through staged choreographies. Friction Atlas is an ongoing critical archive, where laws regulating behaviours and gatherings in public spaces, sampled from different contexts, are represented and collected. Addressing the issue of legibility of public space, it aims to make regulations explicit, through graphical devices. By drawing 1:1 diagrams, enacting laws on public surfaces, the project makes legal prescriptions and loopholes debatable. Through the engagement of the public, the dynamics of authority become also physically discernible. The diagrams represent cases from different cities, including Athens, Genoa, Cairo, Washington, Stockholm, Sydney, New York, and Rome. We invite the public to participate in a choreographed debate, in a rereading of urban space, which will highlight some of its hidden aspects.

Friction Atlas was initiated during BIO 50, the 24th Biennial of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Initiated in 2014 by Paolo Patelli and Giuditta Vendrame, La Jetée is a design and research collaborative based in Milano and Eindhoven. We manipulate research, design, and art practice into self-initiated and commissioned projects. We produce images, words and tools; we do, undo, re-do ourselves, and the world around us. Our work has been shown at international exhibitions and events, including at Grey Cube Gallery in Helsinki, BIO 50 Biennial of Design in Ljubljana, la Biennale di Venezia – 14th International Architecture Exhibition. We have given workshops, including at Artellewa in Cairo, SALT Istanbul, Strelka Institute in Moscow.

Paolo is an architect and researcher, currently PhD candidate at the Politecnico di Milano. Giuditta is a designer, currently studying Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven.
